When a tooth is damaged, decayed, or weakened, it may feel overwhelming trying to figure out what to do next. A dental crown is one of the most common and effective ways to restore a tooth’s strength, shape, and appearance, but many people walk into their first appointment without knowing what the process is really like. Understanding each step from start to finish can make the entire experience far more comfortable and far less intimidating.

What Happens During the Consultation?
Your journey begins with a thorough evaluation to determine whether a crown is the right solution for your tooth. During this appointment, Dr. Hazim will examine the affected tooth, review digital X-rays, and discuss your goals and concerns.
A crown may be recommended in several situations, including:
- A tooth with significant decay that cannot support a filling
- A cracked or fractured tooth at risk of breaking further
- A tooth that has undergone a root canal and needs protection
- A severely worn tooth due to grinding or other causes
This initial appointment gives you the opportunity to ask questions, understand your options, and feel confident moving forward before any work begins.
Preparing the Tooth and Taking Impressions
Once you and Dr. Hazim agree on a treatment plan, the preparation appointment comes next. During this visit, the tooth is gently shaped to create room for the crown to fit properly over it. A small amount of enamel is removed from the sides and top of the tooth to ensure a secure, natural-looking fit.
After shaping, impressions of your tooth are taken. At our office, we use the CEREC Primescan digital scanning system, which captures precise, three-dimensional images of your teeth without the need for traditional putty impressions. This technology improves accuracy and makes the process significantly more comfortable. According to the American Dental Association, crowns are custom-made to match the color, size, and shape of your surrounding teeth, which is why accurate impressions are essential for getting great results.
Same-Day or Multi-Visit Crowns
Depending on your specific needs, you may have your crown placed in a single visit or over two appointments. Our office offers CEREC same-day crowns, which are milled right here using our in-office technology, allowing many patients to walk out with their permanent crown the same day they come in. For cases requiring a dental lab, a temporary crown will protect the prepared tooth while the permanent restoration is being crafted.
If a temporary crown is placed, it is important to treat it with proper care. Avoid sticky or hard foods, and be gentle when cleaning around the area until your final restoration is ready.
Placing the Final Crown
During the final appointment, Dr. Hazim will remove the temporary crown if one was placed, clean the tooth thoroughly, and carefully fit the permanent crown. Adjustments are made as needed to ensure your bite feels natural and comfortable before the crown is permanently cemented in place.
After the placement is complete, you may notice mild sensitivity for a few days, particularly to temperature. This is completely normal and typically passes quickly. Good oral hygiene habits, including brushing, flossing, and keeping up with regular cleanings, will help your crown last for many years. Crowns placed over composite dental fillings or other prior restorations can be especially long-lasting when maintained properly.
