Every fall, the same thing happens on our schedule. Patients who’ve been deferring since summer start calling. Patients who’ve been meaning to get back on a six-month routine look at the calendar and notice that December is approaching faster than they thought. Parents bring kids in now that school is back and appointments are easier to plan around. We see this every year, and the timing isn’t random — there are real reasons fall works well for dental care.
Dr. Peter Hazim has practiced in Allen since 1999. The fall appointment surge is something his team works with deliberately, because the end-of-year calendar creates real financial opportunities for patients that most people don’t realize are available until someone explains them.
Using Benefits Before They Reset
Most dental insurance plans work on a calendar year. Whatever benefit isn’t used by December 31st disappears. Dr. Hazim explains how the practice approaches this with patients: “Especially towards the end of the year now in September, October, people want to maximize their dental benefit. So we do part of their treatment this year and we do the other part next year.” The benefit of this is real money — not a scheduling trick.
For patients who need work that would be expensive to handle all in one benefit year, fall is when the math works. Say someone needs several crowns — the most critical ones get addressed before December, using this year’s coverage, and the rest wait until January when a fresh benefit year opens. Our front office team helps patients figure out what this looks like in their specific situation, because what the benefits card says and what’s actually available are often two different things until someone does the calculation with you.
Smile Work and the Holiday Calendar
The holidays bring gatherings, photos, and the kind of social situations where people are more focused than usual on how they look. Patients thinking about cosmetic work — veneers, bonding, or a cleaning to get surface staining off — are better positioned getting that done in October or November than trying to schedule it around holiday events.
We also regularly see patients in fall who’ve been managing something uncomfortable for months and have finally decided to deal with it before the holidays. Implant consultations, crown evaluations, and initial visits for full mouth reconstruction patients all follow the same pattern: someone who’s been putting off a decision finally comes in when they have time and a clear financial reason to act. Starting in September or October means there’s time to complete the first phase of care before year-end.
When Treatment Needs to Be Phased Over Time
Dr. Hazim describes how phased treatment planning works: “We can basically customize their treatment and do the most important or phase it, so in a way we can continue the treatment in the future without compromising the quality.” Fall is when this approach is most useful to patients, because the lead time before December 31st is longer than it is in November.
The cases where this matters most are the ones with built-in healing time. Implant placement and the final crown are separated by months of osseointegration, and cases that need bone grafting before the implant add even more time before placement is possible. A patient who starts a consultation in September has a realistic shot at completing the first phase this year. One who schedules in late November usually doesn’t have that option.
Kids and the Back-to-School Window
Children tend to keep dental appointments more consistently during the school year because the schedule is predictable. Fall is a natural window for thinking about sealants and fluoride treatments — sealants are most valuable when permanent molars are coming in, and a fall check-up is a good time to assess where a child is developmentally. Parents who schedule the next appointment before leaving the office, rather than planning to call later, end up with kids who actually come in regularly rather than drifting out of the routine.
